Lulu Carter led DU with three assists and also scored one goal against Claremont.
Claremont's Molly Murtaugh tied the game at 13-3 with 1:29 to play and the Athena's Courtney Cronin gave her team the lead with 36 seconds left in regulation to result in a heartbreaking 14-13 loss for the Big Red from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium on Friday afternoon.
After Cronin's go-ahead goal the Big Red won the ensuing draw and with 18 seconds left a foul was called on CMS setting up a free position attempt for Denison senior Lindsay Howard (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). Her attempt sailed high but they retainned possession and a second foul would give the Big Red one last shot with six seconds left. Freshman Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) went low but the goalie made an excellent save to preserve the eighth win of the season for her team.
Du trailed 10-6 early in the second half but a four-goal scoring run powered by one score from Thurner and three goals from Howard would tie the game with 15:19 to play. Claremont's Sarah Dick would score her fifth goal of the game with 15 minutes to play but Denison's Cassedy O'Neill (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) answered off a pretty feed from Thurner to tie the game once more.
With the contest deadlocked at 12-12 the Big Red took their first lead of the game with 5:38 to play off a goal from Thurner from Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy). That lead would hold until Murtaugh and Cronin's scores gave the Athena's the win.
Howard and Thurner both led Denison with three goals apiece. Thurner added two assists and Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School) also added one goal and three assists. Senior Katie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) finished with four ground balls to lead the way. Senior Amanda Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) turned in 11 assists for the Big Red and Michelle Bennett (Bronx, N.Y./Taft) led the team with five draws.
The loss drops Denison's record to 3-7. Four of those seven defeats have come by just one goal. They will look to get back on track with the first of three consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference games on Sunday (April 19) versus Ohio Wesleyan at 3 p.m. from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
