Amanda Wilson posted a season-high 16 saves which helped the Big Red hand OWU a 13-8 defeat on Sunday.
Senior goalie Amanda Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) posted 16 saves and held the Battling Bishops to a 1-for-12 performance in 8-meter attempts which resulted in a 13-8 victory for the Big Red over Ohio Wesleyan on Senior Day from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
The victory snaps a six-game losing skid for Denison and keeps them in the thick of the North Coast Athletic Conference playoff picture. At 1-3 in league play and conference games left against Allegheny (2-3) and Oberlin (0-4), two more wins for the Big Red will keep their hopes for a conference tournament berth alive.
Denison took a 6-3 lead in the first half thanks to a pair of nifty goals by senior Michelle Bennett (Bronx, N.Y./Taft) and two goals by Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) with under two minutes to play in the first half. Bennett had two goals off three shots to go along with three ground balls, one draw and one caused turnover, all in the first half of play.
On the other end of the field Wilson slammed the door time and time again on the Bishops. She posted 11 of her 16 saves in the first half and also had three ground balls. OWU went 0-for-5 on free position attempts and committed eight turnovers in the period.
In the second half DU stormed out of the gates with three goals from Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends), Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School) and Lisa Feroli (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) to increase their lead to 9-3 with 24 minutes to play. The Bishops would cut that lead to four at 12-8 when Marlowe Mavian scored off an assist from Elizabeth Lambert with 6:17 left. After a timeout by the Big Red, Myhurm would find senior Lindsay Howard (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) in front of the cage for her 14th goal of the season, setting the final score at 13-8.
Denison edged the Bishops in shots 30-28 and gathered 20 ground balls to OWU's 18. Wilson led the team in ground balls with four. Carter, Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier[Ill.]) and Kelly Lengsfield (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) all had three ground balls. The Big Red caused 13 of the Bishop's 15 turnovers. Bethany Keller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Katie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Alyssa Zinsser (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) all had two caused turnovers for DU.
Leading goal scorers for the Big Red were Myhrum, Bennett, Langsam, and Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) who all scored two goals apiece. Ohio Wesleyan was led by Hannah Mudge's three goals.
Today's game was the final home contest for seniors Howard, Kubasta, Wilson and Bennett.
