Big Red's Comeback Attempt falls just short against Claremont

Date: April 27, 2007
Location: GRANVILLE

The Big Red women's lacrosse team battled back from a six-goal halftime deficit thanks to six goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, but four goals by Claremont-McKenna in the final seven minutes of play would lock up a wild 18-16 victory for Claremont. Claremont entered the game with an undefeated record and as the top-ranked team in the west region. They looked like it early as they rattled of five unanswered goals to take a 9-3 lead with 7:36 left in the half. In the second half DU came out blistering, when Krissy Frost scored two goals and Quinn Simmons found the back of the cage off an assist by Meg Wilcox all in the opening minute of the half. DU continued to chip away and with 16:42 left, Frost's free position goal completed the comeback and knotted the game at 12-12. With Denison trailing 13-12 with 9:04 left Michelle Bennett received a feed from Frost and in one motion, spun to her right and shot, sending the ball past Claremont goalie Kristen Huff for her third goal of the season. The next two goals would be scored by Claremont and Read Powel kept Denison close with her second goal of the game with 3:56 remaining but it wouldn't be enough. The Big Red took 45 shots to Claremont's 27 scoring tries. Huff recorded 16 saves in the cage for the Athenas while Carolyn Hicks notched six for Denison. Powel had four draws to lead Denison and Bennett led the squad with four ground balls. Frost finished the game with five goals and two assists, running her season total to 43 goals, the most by a Denison player since Amy Hemmelgarn scored 46 in 2001. Simmons followed Frost with four goals and Wilcox added two goals and one assists. Becca Schoenherr and Maggie Jaus rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Claremont (13-0) was led in scoring by Courtney Cronin and Callae Snively's four-goal efforts. Lindsay Gaesser had seven assists. The Big Red will host the College of Wooster in a critical North Coast Athletic Conference battle on Saturday (April 28) at 1 p.m. A victory for the Big Red would assure them a share of the NCAC regular season championship.
