Women's Lacrosse: Denison falls to Colorado College at Heron Draw

The Colorado College women's lacrosse team defeated Denison University 16-6 today, in game two of the Heron Draw. The Tigers improved to 7-2 overall, while the Big Red fell to 2-5 on the season.
Colorado College senior Mallory Newton led all scorers with five goals, while sophomore Kristin Rider tallied two goals and two assists. Junior Alexa Dougherty notched three goals, and classmate Natalie Abel and first-year Gioia Garden each added two for the Tigers.
The Big Red was led by first-year Kelly Vogt’s (Gates Mills, Ohio/Hawken School) two tallies, and a goal and as assist from senior Quinn Simmons (Medina, Ohio/Medina).
The Tigers jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead, from which the Big Red would never recover. Newton tallied the first two goals for Colorado College during the run, followed by goals from Rider, Dougherty, and first-year Lindsay Chan.
Denison got on the board with seven minutes left to play in the first half, as Simmons set up Vogt for the score. Vogt netted her second goal on a free position shot with 4:28 remaining, cutting her team’s deficit to 5-2, but the Tigers answered with two more goals to end the stanza, and took a 7-2 advantage into halftime.
Colorado College outscored the Big Red 9-4 in the second half. Rider and Newton opened the period’s scoring with back-to-back goals in the first 2:11 of action, putting the Tigers up 9-2.
Denison sophomore Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) tallied at the 25:38 mark, and Simmons netted a free position shot to cut the lead to six at 20:41, but the Big Red would not get closer.
Denison's junior goalkeeper Amanda Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) collected 18 saves, as Colorado College outshot the Big Red 44-17. Junior Jess Van Doren stopped six shots for the Tigers.
Both teams will be in action again tomorrow, April 6, on McCooey Field. Colorado College will faceoff against Lycoming (6-4) at 11 a.m., followed by Denison taking on host No. 13 William Smith (7-0) at 1:30 p.m
