Women's Lacrosse: Wooster holds off Big Red in NCAC Semifinals
Date: May 2, 2008
Location: DELAWARE, Ohio
Hillary Darragh scored five goals and broke a 6-6 tie in the 43rd minute helping the No. 3 seed, Wooster Fighting Scots to a 8-7 win over the No. 2 seed Denison Big Red on Friday at Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio.
Denison scored the first goal of the game, just 58 seconds into the contest off an unassisted goal by Kelly Vogt (Gates Mills, Pa./Hawken School). From there DU and the Scots would trade off goals for the next 10 consecutive scores. With the score tied 5-5, Darragh found the back of the cage for the fourth time. Four minutes later Denison's Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) scored her second goal of the game.
That would set up Darragh's go-ahead goal and then, less than a minute later, Nina Dine netted the eventual game winner.
With 15 minutes remaining Denison cut the Wooster lead to one thanks to Jenny Strathern (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) score off an assist by Lindsay Howard (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest). Before Denison could mount much of a rally, Wooster won the draw and was successful holding on to the ball and keeping it out of Denison's side of the field.
The game was plagued by 59 total fouls which resulted in 18 free position attempts. Wooster made the most of theirs, going 4-for-7 on their eight-meter attempts. Denison was 3-for-4 in the first half in free position but struggled in the second half, going 0-for-7.
Denison was led by Meg Wilcox (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and Langsam's two goals. Katie Kubasta (Medina, Ohio/Medina) led the Big Red with five ground balls.
Both goalies posted 11 saves in the cage and Wooster's Romy Eberle paced the Fighting Scots with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Denison's season comes to a close while Wooster advances to tomorrow's NCAC Championship against the top-seeded Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops.
Notable:
Following the championship, Denison's Bethany Keller and Katie Kubasta were named to the All-Tournament team.
