Women's Lacrosse Earns Share of NCAC Title with win over Wooster

Date: April 28, 2007
Location: GRANVILLE

Trailing 8-3 at halftime, a fast second-half start would be imperative if the Big Red were to have a chance at mounting a comeback. Led by some tremendous goalkeeping by veteran netminder Carolyn Hicks and a very aggressive offensive attack led by leading scorer Krissy Frost, Denison climbed the mountain and pulled off a 14-13 victory over previous conference unbeaten Wooster, Saturday at Piper Stadium. Denison came out of intermission by scoring five unanswered goals to tie the game at 8-8 with 20:11 left to play. On the final goal of the run, Frost sprinted 50 yards in transition and let loose a shot in front of the goal, completing a spectacular fast-break. Over the next 10 minutes DU and Wooster would trade off goals but at the 10:26 mark Becca Schoenherr scored her first goal of the day and triggered another 5-0 run which would span five minutes and leave Denison with a 14-10 lead and Wooster fans scratching their heads. Frost finished the day with six goals, running her season total to 49. Hicks posted 16 saves on the day, including 10 saves off Wooster's 15 shots in the second half. Her 16 stops were one off her season high. Quinn Simmons scored all three of her goals in the second half and also assisted on Meg Wilcox's goal at the 21:39 mark. Wilcox posted to goals while Schoenherr scored a pair and Lindsay Buhr added one goal and five ground balls. Junior Hayley Stineman led the team with eight ground balls and Read Powel finished with four draws to lead DU. Wooster's Annie Steward scored four goals and Taryn Higgins and Cassie Brown added three to pace the Fighting Scots. Goalie Jamie Dannenberg recorded nine saves in 60 minutes. The victory claims a three-way share for the 2007 NCAC regular season championship. Ohio Wesleyan, Denison and Wooster all head to the postseason with one conference loss. After tiebreakers, Denison will enter the 2007 NCAC Tournament as the #2 seed, behind top-seeded Ohio Wesleyan. The Big Red will take on #3 Wooster on Friday, May 4 in Delaware, Ohio at a time yet to be determined. The Battling Bishops will face either, Kenyon, Oberlin or Allegheny.
