Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Putnam and Hammeren pace DU at Big Red Invite

Katherine Sylvia finished second in the discus at Friday's Big Red Invitational.

Sophomore Ashley Putnam (North East, Pa./North East) and junior Emily Hammeren (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) each posted victories to pace Denison at the Big Red Invitational on Friday afternoon in Granville.  Putnam took first in the 800-meter run while Hammeren was victorious in the pole vault.

Putnam finished her face in a time of 2:22.24 which was over two seconds faster then the runner up. Hammeren once again led the pole vaulting field with a clearing of 10-06.00 while teammate Ashlee Dickson (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) took third with a mark of 8-11.75. Rookie Alesha Stewart (Houma, La./La. School for Math, Science & Art) and junior Maggie Snyder (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) finished third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 13.40 and 28.02, respectively.

In other field events, sophomore Emily Taylor (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and first-year Katherine Sylvia (Butler, Pa./Butler) both finished runner-up in their respective events. Taylor came in second in the shot put with a heave of 37-08.75 and Sylvia while tossed the discus 119-07. Junior Emily Handelman (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) came in third in the hammer throw with a distance of 104-04.

The Big Red return to action next weekend when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
