Denison sophomore Katie Navarre (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) competed in the women's 10,000 meters at the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Thursday night at Don Drumm Stadium in Marietta, Ohio and placed sixth out of 17 runners in the event.

Navarre posted a time of 36:16.97 which was less that one minute off the winning pace set by Williams' Lauren Philbrook at 35.24.78.  Navarre entered the race with the nation's second-fastest time, trailing only Philbrook.  She jumped out to an early lead and remained in first place for more than half the race until Philbrook and four others caught her down the stretch.

Her sixth-place finish is Navarre's first All-America performance in track and field and the best finish by a Denison female runner in the history of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  In the fall, the second-year standout finished 9th at the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship.

She will continue her quest for an individual national championship on Saturday when she competes in the women's 5,000 meter run at 4:20 p.m. in Marietta.
