Sophomore Katie Navarre (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took first place in the women's 10,000 meter run and set a new North Coast Athletic Conference record in the process to highlight the first day of competition for the Denison Big Red at the NCAC Championship from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Denison sits in second place with 45 points, trailing only Ohio Wesleyan who checks in with 69 points.  Third place is shared between Allegheny and Oberlin with 28 points.

In the 10K, Navarre broke a conference record which had stood since 1994.  Her time of 36:01.69 bested the previous conference-best of 36:16.01 set by Allegheny's Tina Chase 15 years ago.

The Big Red also got a very strong effort from their field athletes on Friday.  Katherine Sylvia (Butler, Pa/Butler) placed second in the women's discus and Emily Handelman (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) followed in third place.  Sylvia posted a throw of 112'02" while Handelman followed with a distance of 106'11".  Antionette Belson (Gates Mills, Ohio/Laurel) took seventh in the event.

In the pole vault, Emily Hammeren (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) ended up in third place after clearing 9'4.5" in the event.  The shot put saw junior Emily Taylor (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) finish in fifth place by throwing 34'3.5".  Also finishing in the points was Sylvia with a throw of 32'5.5".

In the sprint preliminaries, Ashley Putnam (North East, Pa./North East) qualified with a seveth place finish in the 800 meter trials.  Alesha Stewart (Houma, La./La. School for MSA) took fifth in the 100 meter dash trials in 13.30 seconds.
