Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Denison competes at Wooster; Navarre wins 10K at Raleigh Relays

Katie Navarre qualified for nationals after winning the 10K at the Raleigh Relays on Friday.

The Denison women's outdoor track and field team tallied 21 points en route to an eighth-place finish at the Wooster Invitational on Saturday. On Friday, Big Red sophomore Katie Navarre (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won the 10,000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Caroline State. Navarre finished the race in a time of 35:16.91 which set a new school record and automatically qualified her for nationals.

Sophomore Ashley Putnam (North East, Pa./North East) finished runner up in the 800-meter run at Wooster with a time of 2:26.14 while teammate first-year Anelia Mutafova (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) took eighth in the event with a mark of 2:32.43. Sophomore Maggie Snyder (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) crossed the line in 28.44 en route taking eighth in the 200-meter dash.

In the field events, rookie Katherine Sylvia (Butler, Pa./Butler) finished sixth in both the discus and shot put throws. Sylvia tossed the discus 101-04 and heaved the shot put 34-04.00.

The 4x400 relay team of freshman Jane Zelenkov (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit), Snyder, Mutafova and Putnam finished the race in 4:34.73 which was good enough for eight place.

Denison returns to action on Saturday (April 4) when they travel to Washington & Jefferson College. The DU throwers will compete at OWU on Saturday.
