Outdoor track and field season got underway on Saturday from blustery Terre Haute, Ind., where the Denison women placed third at the William Welch Invitational hosted by Rose-Hulman. Senior distance runner Jessica Holder (Dover, Ohio/Dover) placed first in the 5,000 meters in 18:55.90 and second in the 1,500 meters to lead Denison. Jessica West (Youngstown, Ohio/Culver Academy) took first place in the 100 meter dash in 13.43 and Erin Davidson (Langhorne, Pa./Bensalem) and Brie Jacquette (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) added first place finishes in the 400 and 100 hurdles, respectively. In the high jump, Maria Denardo (Worthington, Ohio/Milton Union) and Leslie Kreinberg (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) placed 1-2, respectively and Rebecca Tidman (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) cleared 7'6" to win the pole vault. The 400 meter dash saw Abbey Valvano (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) take silver in 1:06.44. Competing at the Raleigh (N.C.) Relays, Elaine Binkley (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) placed seventh in the women's 10,000 meters in 37:15.83. She was one of just two Division III athletes competing in the event. All six runners in front of Binkley were from either Division II or Division I institutions. Also competing at the Raleigh Relays was junior Christine Collins (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls). She placed 15th in the steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 11:25.52.
