Jen Clemmer's goal in the 54th minute led Denison to a season-opening victory over Centre.
The Denison women's soccer team scored two quick second-half goals to pick up a 2-1 victory over Centre in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
Facing a 1-0 deficit after one half, the Big Red offense wasted no time tying the game in the second session. At the 50:15 mark, sophomore Kim Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored to tie the game at 1-1. Oshita headed a high bouncing ball past goalkeeper Rosie McAuley for the unassisted tally.
Denison took the lead for good in the 54th minute of play when sophomore Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor School) found the back of the net. Clemmer settled the ball inside the box, dribbled through a pair of defenders and fired a shot past McAuley.
The Colonels' Erin Menard had a chance to tie the game in the 68th minute, but a diving save by junior goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) kept DU in the lead. Centre's final quality opportunity came in the 76th minute when Chelsea Stanley blasted a shot from the left edge right at Cobb.
The Big Red outshot the Colonels 18-6, with McAuley notching 11 saves and Cobb stopping three shots. Centre's lone goal was scored by Menard in the 11th minute of play.
With the win Denison improves to 1-0 on the season while Centre falls to 0-1.
The Big Red return to action on Sept. 6 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on Nazareth. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
