Women's Soccer: Six Big Red named to All-NCAC squad; Murphy named Coach of the Year

The Denison women's soccer team won their seventh NCAC regular season title in 2008.
The Denison women's soccer team had six members receive 2008 All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors while head coach Gail Murphy was voted NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. The Big Red won their seventh outright NCAC regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 12th time in school history. Denison led the conference in shots (17.71 per game) and was second in the league in goals (44), assists (31), points (119) and shutouts (9).
Senior Sarah Ash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) was first-team all-conference for the second year in a row. Last year's "Offensive Player of the Year", Ash has received four All-NCAC nominations in her career in Granville. She helped spark the Denison offense this season with seven goals and a team-high eight assists. Earlier this season Ash was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team and is looking to earn Academic All-American status.
Joining Ash on the first team were senior Molly Ruano (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) and sophomore Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore). Ruano started in every game for the Big Red during her senior campaign and helped anchor a defense that recorded nine shutouts and allowed just 18 goals. Oshita led the high-powered Big Red offense with 13 goals, including four game winners. The sophomore ranked third in the conference in goals, points (27) and game-winning goals.
Junior Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) received second-team NCAC accolades. Rusch was second on the team in goals and points with 11 and 23, respectively. The junior also tallied three game winners and was a perfect two-for-two on penalty kicks. A first-team selection a year ago, Rusch landed on the an all-conference team for the second straight year.
Rounding out the award-winners for DU were junior Julie Dean (Liberty Township, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and sophomore Haley Gewehr (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck). Dean contributed two goals and six assists while Gewehr was an important cog on the Big Red's defense.Ruano, Oshita, Dean and Gewehr all made their debut on the All-NCAC team.
Ash and Ruano are the two Denison seniors and have accumulated a 60-20-9 record for a .725 career winning percentage. The duo won two NCAC regular season titles and made four NCAA tournament appearances including a trip to the Round of 16 in 2006 and the NCAA's "Elite Eight" in 2005.
Murphy was named "Coach of the Year" after leading her squad to a 7-1 NCAC mark and the squad's seventh regular season title in school history. In her 12 seasons at the helm of the Big Red, she has compiled a 178-51-16 (.759) record and made the NCAA tournament 10 times. Murphy, who also won the award in 2005, led Denison to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III tournament.
