Junior Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School) and sophomore Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmor) each tallied a goal to lift the 25th-ranked Denison women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Ohio Northern University on Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville on Wednesday night. The victory snapped the Big Red's three-game winless streak.

In the 68th minute, Rusch netted her fifth goal of the season to put the Big Red up 1-0. Rusch settled a crossing pass from junior Julie Dean (Liberty Township, Ohio/Mt. Notre Dame) and buried the ball from 17 yards out past Polar Bear goalkeeper Lauren Roberts.

Denison added to its lead at the 71:39 mark when Hoskin, who had left the game in the 56th minute do to an injury, booted the ball over Roberts head and into the back of the net. The sophomore's second score of the season was set up by a long serve by junior Kate Henderson (Denver, Colo./George Washington).

Ohio Northern trimmed the deficit in half, 2-1, when freshman Alyssa Merrick found the back of the net in the 76th minute. Merrick settled a clearing header and shot an arching ball past Big Red goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy).

DU outshot the Polar Bears 18-8 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Cobb finished the game with fives stops while Roberts and Polar Bear starting goalie Kristen Dewees each corralled a save. Dewees' time in goal was limited when she was injured early in the contest.

With the win, Denison improves to 5-2-1 on the season while ONU falls to 4-3-1. The Big Red return to action on Saturday (Sept. 27) when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
