Three Denison teams gear up for NCAC Tournaments

Three Denison teams have qualified for the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference postseason tournaments and Denison University will be the host for two of those semifinal match-up's. On Tuesday (Nov. 3) the top-seeded women's soccer team will host Earlham College at 7 p.m. at Barclay-Thomsen Field. On Wednesday (Nov. 4), the second-seeded men's soccer team will host Kenyon College at 7 p.m. at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. Also on Wednesday, the field hockey team will travel to The College of Wooster for a 2 p.m. semifinal clash at John P. Papp Stadium.
In the women's soccer semifinal, Denison enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the second straight season and will host No. 4 Earlham College, who is making their first tournament appearance in school history. The Big Red are ranked 12th in the latest NSCAA top-25 poll and have posted shutouts in 15 of 19 matches this season. In conference play, the DU defense has allowed only two goals. Offensively, Kim Oshita has scored a career-high 15 goals, which is the most by a Denison player since Dana Grandmaison's 16 goals in the 1999 season. On Oct. 14 the Big Red defeated Earlham in Richmond, Ind., 2-0 thanks to goals by Oshita and Jen Clemmer. Tickets prices for the women's soccer match are $7 for adults and $3 for children and students with a valid ID. On Wednesday the Big Red field hockey team will make the trip to The College of Wooster for a semifinal match-up against the top-seeded Fighting Scots. Denison qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2006 but defeating Earlham 4-1 on Saturday. The Big Red has bounced back from a 3-15 season in 2008 to post a record of 11-7 in 2009. The 11 victories are the most by a Big Red field hockey team since 2002. Denison and Wooster split the regular season series this year, with both squads winning on their home field. The Big Red are led offensively by forward Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest). The first-year has scored 17 goals, which is the most by a Denison player since 1993. Senior Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) has scored eight times while dishing out a career-high nine assists. Ticket prices for the field hockey semifinal from Wooster will be $5 for adults and $3 for children and students with a valid ID.
At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the Denison men's soccer team will take on Kenyon College at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The Big Red have made a return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2006. That season the Big Red were seeded second and went on to capture the conference tournament championship with an overtime win over Allegheny. DU enters the postseason with a record of 10-4-3 and clinched home field advantage in the first round with a 3-0 victory over The College of Wooster on Saturday. They are led by senior midfielder Peter Shorten (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) who has scored six goals and three assists. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Donahue (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) boasts a 0.95 goals against average and has racked up eight shutouts in 17 starts.
