On a day honoring one of the most successful senior classes in Denison women's soccer history, it was four freshmen that came up big to light the scoreboard as the Big Red downed the Hiram College Terriers 4-0.
In the game's 31st minute, freshman Meg Polite (San Anselmo, Calif./Marin Catholic) got a foot on the ball in a scramble in front of the goal to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead that would hold until half.
In the 68th minute, freshman Haley Gewehr (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored from 18 yards out to put Denison up 2-0. The goal is the first of her collegiate career.
Freshman Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmor) scored ten minutes later after she blasted a shot off of Hiram keeper Emily Bristol and followed it up with a header for the score.
With 32 seconds remaining, freshman Eliza Miller (Canal Winchester, Ohio/The Wellington School) tucked a shot inside the upper right corner to give the Big Red their final lead at 4-0.
The Big Red took 18 shots on goal, 14 of which were saved by Hiram freshman Emily Bristol. Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) led the Big Red with six shots on the day.
Senior Liz Gillette (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL) recorded her fifth consecutive shutout. She has held opponents scoreless for the last 490 minutes of action.
Denison is now 12-4-2 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play. The victory locks up the #2 seed in next week's NCAC Tournament where DU will host #3 Ohio Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 31).
