Women's Soccer: Wittenberg edges Big Red in battle of nationally ranked teams

Date: October 10, 2007
Location: SPRINGFIELD, Ohio

Courtney Shubitowski broke a scoreless tie in the 59th minute and Amy Meige added a goal just before the final buzzer to lead the 17th ranked Wittenberg Tigers past the 13th ranked Denison Big Red, 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.

The two teams played the first half without a goal and both squads attempted three shots, with all three of the Big Red's attempts coming on-goal.

In the second half Wittenberg got on the board when Amanda Farrell sent a through ball to Shubitowski at the top of the box who converted the goal.

Denison fought to tie the game, taking three shots in the second half, with one of those resulting in a save for Tiger goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke.  The shutout tied O'Rourke with former Denison goalkeeper Elizabeth Clapacs for first place in the NCAC career record books with 41 shutouts.

Denison (9-4, 2-1 NCAC) was led in shots by Anna Rush (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) and Kate Henderson (Denver, Colo./George Washington) who each attempted two. Wittenberg (11-2-1, 2-0-1 NCAC) edged DU in the shot category 7-6 and O'Rourke stopped four Big Red scoring attempts while Denison goalkeeper Liz Gillette (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL) saved two would-be goals.

The two teams tied with four corner kicks apiece and Wittenberg committed nine fouls to Denison's seven.

The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 13) when they host AlleghenyCollege at 11 a.m.
