Women's Soccer: Wittenberg edges Big Red in battle of nationally ranked teams

Courtney Shubitowski broke a scoreless tie in the 59th
minute and Amy Meige added a goal just before the final buzzer to lead the 17th
ranked Wittenberg Tigers past the 13th ranked Denison Big Red, 2-0 on Wednesday
afternoon at Edwards-Maurer Field.
The two teams played the first half without a goal and both
squads attempted three shots, with all three of the Big Red's attempts coming
on-goal.
In the second half Wittenberg
got on the board when Amanda Farrell sent a through ball to Shubitowski at the
top of the box who converted the goal.
Denison
fought to tie the game, taking three shots in the second half, with one of
those resulting in a save for Tiger goalkeeper Meghan O'Rourke. The shutout tied O'Rourke with former Denison goalkeeper Elizabeth Clapacs for first place in
the NCAC career record books with 41 shutouts.
Denison (9-4, 2-1 NCAC) was
led in shots by Anna Rush (Washington,
D.C./Sidwell Friends) and Kate
Henderson (Denver, Colo./George Washington) who each
attempted two. Wittenberg
(11-2-1, 2-0-1 NCAC) edged DU in the shot category 7-6 and O'Rourke stopped
four Big Red scoring attempts while Denison
goalkeeper Liz Gillette (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL)
saved two would-be goals.
The two teams tied with four corner kicks apiece and Wittenberg committed nine fouls to Denison's seven.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 13) when
they host AlleghenyCollege at 11 a.m.
