The Denison softball team kept their perfect North Coast Athletic Conference record in tact with a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon College on Thursday afternoon in Granville. The Big Red took game one 10-4 and held off the Ladies in the nightcap for a 6-5 victory.
Denison jumped out to an early lead in the opener with three-run outings in the first and second innings. Everyone in the Big Red lineup contributed to a season-high tying 16 hits in game one. After falling into a one-run hole in game two, a leadoff home run by sophomore Erica Evans (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) in the third inning sparked a three-run frame which grabbed the advantage back for DU. Down 6-3 heading into the seventh, Kenyon plated two runs to trim the margin to one. However, junior Sam Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) got Brianna LaChusa to fly out to left center to preserve the win.
Junior Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars Senior) went 5-for-8 for the day with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored while Evans and first-year Lauren Lynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) finished the afternoon 4-for-7. Evans scored four times and Lynn had a double, two RBIs and three runs.
Junior hurler Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) went five innings in the opener allowing four runs (three earned) with three strikeouts en route to her sixth win of the season. Rumschlag tossed 1.2 inning in the first game giving up just one hit and notching two Ks to pick up her first save of the year. Rumschlag returned in game two to pick up her seventh win of the season. The Carmel, Ind. native allowed five runs on 12 hits in the victory.
Denison improves to 14-11 on the year and 6-0 in the NCAC while the Ladies fall to 14-10 overall and 3-3 in league action. The Big Red return to action on Saturday when they host Allegheny College in a pivotal NCAC doubleheader. First pitch from Granville is slated for 1 p.m.
