Softball: Big Red hits their way past Heidelberg

Claire Kopko hit her fifth career home run in game one versus Heidelberg.

Date: March 25, 2008
Location: GRANVILLE

Denison ran their record to 9-1 following a doubleheader sweep of Heidelberg College on Tuesday in Granville.  The Big Red won game one 9-0 in six innings and came from behind in the nightcap for a 5-3 victory.

In game one, this week's North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, Bri Scrofano (Longs, S.C./McDowell), went five innings and allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out three.  Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) pitched the final inning and held on to the shutout.

There were plenty of hitting stars for Denison in the opener.  Claire Kopko (Washigton, Pa./Trinity) went 2-for-2 with a double and a two-run home run in the sixth inning.  Ali Teopas (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Rachel Cotterman (New Lexington, Ohio/Fisher Catholic) and Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars Senior) also added two RBIs, each.

Patience prevailed in game two as the Big Red drew 11 walks and scored three runs to tie the game in the bottom of the third.  Two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning would put DU on top to stay.  Freshman Mandy Krutzler (Geneva, Ill./Hudson) pitched the final five innings in relief of starter Sam Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five.

Kopko was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

Denison will host a five-team tournament that will begin on Friday (March 28) at 2 p.m.  Four games will take place on Friday and four more will be played on Saturday.  All will take place on the Big Red's home field in Granville.  Alma, Otterbein, Ohio Wesleyan and Olivet will join Denison as the participants.
