Softball: Denison and Hiram split twinbill

Denison scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Hiram College 4-2 in game one, but the Terriers rebounded with a 5-3 victory in game two on Monday afternoon in Granville.
The Big Red countered Hiram's first inning run thanks to a RBI single by Ali Silver (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) that scored Ali Teopas (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview).
In the bottom of the third sophomore catcher Brie Berkopec blasted her second home run of the season a good 30' beyond the 214' sign in left-center field to give DU a 2-1 advantage.
Denison would extend their lead in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double by Claire Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and a run scoring single by pinch hitter Sam Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral).
Hiram would put two runners on in the seventh but a 6-3-5 double play to end the game would set the final at 4-2 and clinch Denison's 16th win of the season.
Denison starter Bri Scrofano (Longs, S.C./McDowell) earned her ninth win of the season and allowed seven hits and one earned run in seven innings. She struck out five and walked only two. The loss was charged to Sarah Padilla who allowed nine hits and five runs in five innings.
Game two saw Padilla enter the game in the fifth inning in relief of Hiram starter Jamie Brown. She would get the win thanks to a two-run sixth inning that broke a 3-3 tie. In the sixth inning it was a Stephanie Zunic double that scored Megan Samuel and Ashley Crowder with the go-ahead runs.
The loss was charged to Rumschlag who pitched three innings in relief of Mandy Krutzler (Geneva, Ill./Hudson).
Berkopec was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and on run scored in the two games. Rachel Cotterman (New Lexington, Ohio/Fisher Catholic) finished the day 4-for-6 with one run scored.
Denison's record moves to 16-8 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC. Hiram's record moves to 8-12 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Big Red will continue conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a doubleheader with Kenyon College at 3:30 p.m.
