Softball Clinches NCAC Regular Season Crown with Sweep of Hiram

The Denison softball team locked up their second consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship on Sunday following a 4-3 and 5-2 pair of wins over Hiram College. The wins improve Denison's record to 27-13 overall and 13-1 in NCAC play. DU will host next weekends NCAC Tournament for the second consecutive season and for the fifth time out of the last seven years.
Junior Bri Scrofano earned her seventh win of the year after firing a complete game in the opener. She allowed seven hits but two Denison errors led to Hiram's three runs in the fifth inning. Offensively, DU pounded out 15 hits in game one, led by Claire Kopko's 3-for-3 effort. Andrea Carella was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double and Ali Sliver was 2-for-3 with one run batted in.
Senior Rachel Thomas worked game two and improved to 11-3 thanks to her eight hit, five strikeout complete game. Kopko again led Denison at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Silver and Erin Porter both had two hits apiece. DU had 12 hits in game two but left 11 runners on base.
NCAC Tournament play will begin on Friday (May 4) and it will feature a rematch of today's two teams. Hiram College will take their 21-12 record into the tournament for the first time in school history and will be the #4 seed. Denison will be the top seed with #2 Wittenberg taking on #3 Allegheny in the other first-round contest. Start times are yet to be determined.
