Softball: Five named to All-NCAC squad

Date: May 14, 2008
Location: CLEVELAND

After winning their fourth North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and advancing to their first NCAA Division III Regional Championship in school history, Denison placed five players on the NCAC's all-conference list as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Senior pitcher Bri Scrofano (Longs, S.C./McDowell) earned her second straight first-team nod after leading the Big Red with a 1.82 ERA and an 18-5 record in 142.0 innings pitched.  Scrofano's 18 wins was just one shy of the Denison single-season record.

Earning second-team honors was sophomores Alex Murray (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/NDCL) and Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars).  It is the first appearance on the conference's all star squad for both players.  Berkopec led Denison in batting with a .405 average and led the NCAC in RBIs with 34.

Both Berkopec and Murray set the tone for Denison's power surge in 2008.  The previous season high for home runs as a team was 11 set last season.  This year, the Big Red slugged 25 round-trippers led by Murray's seven home runs and Berkopec's six blasts.  Murray started 38 games at third base and hit .336 with 10 doubles and 23 RBIs.

Rounding out the all-conference award winners for Denison was senior infielders Ali Silver (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) and Claire Kopko (Washington, Pa./Trinity).  It would be hard to find two careers that mirrored themselves any better than that of Silver and Kopko.  Both played and started 169 career games (school record) and both tied as the program's career hit leader with each totaling 176 hits over their four year career.  Silver made 40 starts this season and hit .310 with 45 hits and 22 RBIs.  Kopko's 114 career RBIs ties her for first in conference history.
