Softball: OWU takes a pair of extra-inning thrillers

Date: April 10, 2008
Location: DELAWARE, Ohio

Ohio Wesleyan took a pair of extra-inning affairs from the Big Red softball team on Thursday afternoon at Delaware Hayes High School.

The Bishops took game one with a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to lock up a 2-1 victory.  Denison took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Rachel Cotterman homered to right field.  OWU would tie the game in the sixth off an RBI double.  Senior Bri Scrofano went the distance for Denison and allowed only five hits in 7.2 innings pitched.  Both runs were earned and she struck out five.

In game two Denison broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 10th inning thanks to an RBI ground out by Ali Teopas.  In the home half of the inning, Ohio Wesleyan's Tara VanVranken singled up the middle to score Amanda Sanders with the tying run.  After VanVranken moved to third on an error, Rita Cook drove her in with the game winning hit to center.

Freshman Mandy Krutzler pitched all 9.2 innings and allowed four earned runs off 11 hits.  She struck out one and walked three.  Ohio Wesleyan's Rachel Seibel earned the victory in game one and two.

Denison falls to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.  The Bishops are 10-12 overall and 5-1 in league play.
