Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Denison in fifth after first day of NCAC Championships

The North Coast Athletic Conference women's outdoor track and field championships got underway at Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday and the Big Red is in fifth place heading into Friday's final day of competition.
Denison was led by freshman Emily Taylor (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) who placed third in the shot put with a throw of 36'00.25". Allegheny's Liz Earley was the winner with her throw of 39'05.00". In the discus event, first-year Emily Handelman (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) took fourth place thanks to her throw of 105'11".
Claire Navarro (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) earned five points for the Big Red after her fourth place finish in the long jump. Navarro's jump of 15'10.25" was just behind Oberlin's Chisara Nwabara and Jessica Merrill of Ohio Wesleyan. Allegheny's Emily Pfeufer won the event with a jump of 17'8".
In the pole vault, sophomore Emily Hammeren (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) cleared 9'5.75" which landed her in sixth place.
In the women's 10,000 meter run DU placed three runners in the top-nine. Kelsey Pence (Columbus, Ind./North) took seventh with her time of 42:31.05 and Katie Navarre (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was right behind in 43:13.24. Senior Christine Durkin (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) ended up ninth, 46 seconds behind Navarre.
