Women's Tennis: No. 9 Big Red blanks Geneseo, advances to NCAA Third Round

Kendra Murray (L) and Meghan Damico notched an 8-1 victory to open doubles action on Friday against SUNY-Geneseo. The senior duo returned to record a pair of singles wins in DU's 5-0 decision over the Knights.
The ninth-ranked Denison University women's tennis team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Regional Tournament after a dominating 5-0 victory over SUNY-Geneseo on Friday afternoon in Granville. The Big Red will now take on No. 11 Mary Washington for the right to advance to the "Elite Eight".
DU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after posting a doubles sweep. The senior tandem of Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Kendra Murray (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) notched an 8-1 victory at second doubles to get the Big Red on the board. The teams of Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill), and Erin Chadwell (Chicago, Ill./Traverse City Central) and Kara Zdanowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) also posted 8-1 wins at first and third flights, respectively.
In singles action, the two seniors made short work of their opponents en route to giving Denison the victory. Murray was victorious in straight sets at No. 4 singles with a pair of 6-0 wins. Damico didn't finish far behind with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Vivian Cheung at the first flight.
With the win the Big Red improve to 15-6 on the year while Geneseo ends the 2009 season with a 14-5 record. DU returns to the court on Sunday to take on 11th-ranked Mary Washington in the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Regional Tournament. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
