Women's Tennis: DU advances to Midwest Invitational Championships

Marta Drane won a pair of singles matches helping the Big Red to the Midwest Invitational Championship on Sunday.

The ninth-ranked Denison Univesrity women's tennis team advanced to Sunday's championship match of the Midwest Invitational after posting a pair of wins in the opening two days of competition. The Big Red edged N. 21 Wheaton College (Ill.) 5-4 on Friday and followed that up with a 5-3 victory over 17th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday.

Junior Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and first-year Erin Chadwell (Chicago, Ill./Traverse City Central) posted wins on both Friday and Saturday. Drane opened up the invitational with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Wheaton's Brittney Dunn at No. 3 singles. The junior followed that up with an equally convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Samantha Frank of Gustavus Adolphus. Chadwell defeated the Thunders' Kayli Edwards 6-0, 6-1 at the fourth flight and knocked off the Gusties' Ali O'Neal 6-2, 6-3.

Also recording a pair of victories thus far has been the duo of junior Kara Zdanowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Chadwell at third doubles. The tandem recorded an 8-6 victory over Lindsey Hallet and Sara Federschmidt of Wheaton and defeated Gustavus Adolphus' Erica Dobson and O'Neal 8-3.

Denison improves to 7-5 on the season heading into the championship match of the Midwest Invite.
