Marta Drane (pictured) and Kristin Cobb have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. The pair were the national runner-up in 2008.
Denison's doubles team of junior Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and sophomore Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Division III doubles championship after their first round victory on Friday. In the singles bracket, Cobb and senior Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) lost their first round matches.
After finishing as the national runner's-up a year ago, Cobb and Drane took an important first step toward getting back to that championship match by defeating Paige Sumida and Whitney Waters of Redlands, 6-1, 6-4. That win avenged an 8-4 loss to the pair from Redlands back on March 29 at the Fab Five Tournament hosted by Emory University. Cobb and Drane will take on Washington & Lee's Katie Taubb and Lauren Carie who upset third-seeded Brittany Berckes and Natasha Brown of Amherst College. Berckes was one half of the doubles team that knocked off Drane and Cobb in last year's national championship match.
Saturday's doubles quarterfinal match will begin at 3 p.m.
In the 32-player singles draw, Cobb suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Williams' Grace Baljob and Damico capped off her brilliant career in a Big Red uniform with a three-set loss to Vassar's Nicole Pontee, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
