After a third place finish at the NCAA Championship in 2008 and a quarterfinal victory over fourth ranked Emory University, DU will be looking for a return trip to the NCAA semifinals against a familiar opponent.
Denison faced off against Williams College back on March 27 at the DeKalb Tennis Center in nearby Decatur, Ga and the Ephs, ranked No. 1 at the time, prevailed 5-2 on a neutral, indoor court. Denison's top doubles team and last year's NCAA runner's-up, Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) defeated Cary Gibson and Nikki Reich, 8-4. The Big Red's other victory came from Cobb at No. 2 singles when she stopped Gibson, 6-2, 6-7, 7-3.
The Big Red won their eighth consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championship in 2009 and have posted a 16-6 record while facing off against 11 nationally ranked opponents. Senior Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) is 9-6 at No. 1 singles and classmate Kendra Murray (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) has posted a 10-2 singles record while splitting time between second, fifth and sixth singles.
In doubles play, Cobb and Drane posted an 11-4 record while Damico and Murray have gone 15-5 and carry a 10-match winning streak into Tuesday's match with Williams.
The Eph's are the defending NCAA Champion following a 5-4 victory over Washington & Lee in last year's final. They return junior Grace Blajon and Gibson along with newcomer Kristin Alotta. They posted an 18-2 record this season with both losses coming at the hands of rival, Amherst College, both by a final score of 5-4.
In addition to Denison's push for a team national championship, three individuals will remain in Georgia for the weekend's individual national championship tournament. Damico and Cobb with both compete in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship Tournament while Cobb and Drane will play in the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament. The draw's for the singles and doubles tournaments will not be announced until Thursday afternoon. You can follow Denison's match against Williams at the NCAA Championship Homepage.
