Big Red Falls to Sewanee in NCAA Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

Sewanee won two of three doubles points and took three singles points to earn a 5-1 decision over the Denison Big Red at the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Quarterfinals on Tuesday at the University of Mary Washington.
Sewanee, ranked fourth in the latest FILA/ITA Division III national rankings, got off to a strong start with 8-2, and 8-3 victories at second and third doubles. At first doubles DU sophomore Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and junior Whitney Block (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) gave the Big Red their lone point with a 8-6 win over Gabriela Carvalho and Jordan Casey.
In singles play Carvalho, the second-ranked player in the south central region, knocked out Denison's top singles player and NCAC player of the Year, Megan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) 6-3, 6-0. At third singles Lauren Willett topped Kendra Murray (Kirkwood, Ohio/Kirkwood) 6-1, 6-3 and Molly Willett completed the win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Block.
In other singles matches Denison's Erin Gorsich (Dover, Ohio/Dover) was leading Mary Katherin Stone 6-3, 4-4 when play was suspended and Sara Mitchiner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was holding a 6-3, 3-2 advantage over Casey.
Denison's season comes to a close with an impressive 17-5 record. This was third time out of the last four seasons that the Big Red has advanced to the round of eight in NCAA play. Sewanee (22-1) advances to face the winner of the Gustavus Adolphus-Amherst match on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Damico will remain in Fredericksburg and will compete in the NCAA Division III singles championship tournament which begins on May 18 and continues through Sunday, May 20. In men's competition, in St. Louis, Mo., the doubles team of Randy Lofgren (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Kevin Newman Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) will compete for a NCAA Division III doubles championship at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
