Denison Women's Tennis Sweeps All-Conference Awards

Following their sixth consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championship and their third trip out of the last four seasons to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals, the Big Red swept the NCAC all-conference squad, posting seven individual honorees along with Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Sophomore Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) became the first NCAC Player of the Year from Denison since Lauren Gerlach in 2001. She has posted a 15-5 record at No. 1 singles while going 5-1 against regionally ranked opponents. This is her second straight first-team selection.

Joining Damico on the first-team was freshman Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) who also locked up conference Newcomer of the Year accolades. Drane was 11-7 playing primarily at No. 2 singles. She also teamed up with sophomore Whitney Block (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to form on of the top-ranked doubles teams in the region. The duo posted a 14-8 record at first doubles for the Big Red in 2007.

Sophomore Kendra Murray (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) split time between the first, second and third flights in singles play and was named to the second-team after going 9-7. In doubles, teamed with Damico, she was named to the first team after going 20-3. The duo is currently riding a nine-match winning streak.

Honorable mentions went to Block, junior Erin Gorsich (Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Sarah Mitchiner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). In addition, Gorsich and sophomore Carly Newman (Akron, Ohio/Revere) picked up a second-team doubles award for the conference after posted a 7-2 record.

Rounding out the awards for Denison was head coach Peter Burling who picked up his sixth NCAC Women's Coach of the Year award after leading the team to their seventh conference crown. He has a career record of 139-47 in nine seasons as the women's coach.

The Denison women's team will face Sewanee on Tuesday (May 15) at 9:30 a.m. on the campus of Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Va. Following the team championships, Damico will compete in the singles championships scheduled to take place on May 18-20.
