Women's Tennis: Cobb and Drane advance to NCAA Semifinals in doubles play
Date: May 17, 2008
Location: ST. PETER, Minn.
Kristin Cobb (pictured) and Marta Drane have advanced to the NCAA Division III Doubles Semifinals on Sunday at noon (CST). If they win they will advance to the championship match at 2 p.m. (CST).
The postseason train, otherwise know as the Denison women's tennis team, continues to roll on as the doubles tandem of Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) won a three set, quarterfinal match, to advance to the NCAA Division III semifinals on Sunday at noon (CST).
Cobb and Drane battled back from a 5-3 deficit in the opening set, eventually tying the match at 5-5 before pulling out a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Alicia Hunt and Laura Steinmetz of Trinity (Texas). The second set would be won convincingly by Hunt and Steinmetz, forcing a decisive third set.
Due to 30-40 mph wind gusts at the Brown Tennis Complex, the match was forced to go indoors for the decisive third set where the Big Red won in convincing fashion, 6-3.
Like their team just days earlier, Cobb and Drane are one of just four remaining doubles squads still left vying for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championship. They will face some familiar foes on Sunday in the semifinals in Carnegie Mellon's Amy Staloch and Jennifer Chui. Cobb and Drane defeated the duo from Carnegie Mellon, 8-1 back on April 13 in Gambier, Ohio. Staloch and Chui have been on an impressive run of late. They defeated the second seeded team of Lauren Caire and Katie Tabb of Washington & Lee in three sets this afternoon to advance to the semifinals.
The winner of the Cobb/Drane vs. Staloch/Chui match will face the winner of the Tshema Nash/Sabra Rogers (Emory) vs. Brittany Berckes/Alicia Menezes (Amherst) match in the 2008 Division III Doubles Championship at 2 p.m.
