Date: May 16, 2008
Location: ST. PETER, Minn.
One day after helping their team to a program-best third place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, three Big Red team members remained in Minnesota for the chance to earn individual titles at the NCAA singles and doubles championship tournaments.
While Denison's Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) both competed in the 32-player singles tournament, sophomore Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) and Cobb also received a bid to the 16-team doubles championship.
The duo, who posted a 17-8 record during the 2008 season at No. 1 doubles, advanced to the quarterfinals following a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sewanee's Gab Carvalho and Jordan Casey. Cobb and Damico will face the No. 4 seed from Trinity (Texas), Alicia Hunt and Laura Steinmetz in Saturday's quarterfinals.
Cobb also posted a first-round victory in singles play during the morning session, defeating Rachel Wallwork of Swarthmore, 6-0, 6-4. In the second round she lost a hard-fought three set match to the fifth-seeded Cary Gibson of Williams College. Cobb took the first set 6-3, but lost the final two, 6-3, 6-1.
Denison's other championship qualifier was Damico who was eliminted in the first round by No. 1 seed Siobhan Finicane of Pomona-Pitzer.
