Women's Tennis: Denison claims third place at NCAA Championship

The Denison women's tennis team defeated Pomona-Pitzer to finish third in the nation at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships from St. Peter, Minn.
Denison defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 5-2 on Thursday morning to capture third place at the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. This is the highest finish for a Denison women's tennis team in school history. The Big Red advanced to the NCAA semifinals after a victory over Emory on Tuesday. They dropped a 5-1 decision to defending national champ, Washington & Lee, on Wednesday, but ended their year on a positive note with today's consolation victory.
The No. 3 doubles team of Erin Gorsich (Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Kara Zdanowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) improved their record to 3-0 this week following a 8-4 decision over Zoe Fischer and Alex Margolin. With the match tied at 1-1, Meghan Damico (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Kendra Murray (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) toughed out a 9-7 win over Rebecca Lange and Kasyn Stevenson at No. 2 doubles, placing DU just three points away from a third place national finish.
In fifth singles, Zdanowski overpowered Lindsay Clough, 6-0, 6-0 but Pomona's Siobhan Finicane cut Denison's lead to 3-2 thanks to her 6-2, 6-0 win over Damico at No. 1 singles.
After Finicane's victory, Denison led in three of the four remaining matches on the court. First-year Kristen Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) ran Denison's total to four points following her 6-3, 6-2 win over Lange at No. 2. The winning point would come from Denison's lone senior, Gorsich, who defeated Kathryn Myers, 6-2, 6-3.
Denison's 2008 season comes to a close with a a school record 22 victories and only four defeats. Damico, Cobb and Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) will remain in Minnesota to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships which begin tomorrow and continue through Sunday (May 18).
