Volleyball: Denison falls to Allegheny and CWRU

The Denison Big Red opened Saturday's tri-match with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) loss to Allegheny College and followed that up with 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-15) setback to Case Western Reserve University 

The Gators battled back from an early deficit in game one and managed to hold off the charging Big Red in the second game.

Denison was led by first-year Morgan Sturgeon (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) who paced the Big Red with 10 kills.  Junior Holly Leonard (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) notched 21 digs and Megan Early totaled three blocks.

The Big Red's setting tandem of Claire Koneval (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and Ali Trotter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) combined for 35 assists for DU.

Against Case, the Denison attack was led by freshman Brooke Beavers (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) with 11 kills. The duo of Koneval and Trotter collectively dished out 45 helpers.

Defensively, Leonard registered 30 digs while Lauren Strowder (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) blocked three shots.

Closing out the tri-match Allegheny defeated Case Western Reserve 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15). 

The Big Red falls to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. DU will return to the court on Wednesday (Oct. 1) when they travel to Earlham College for a 7 p.m.match.
