Volleyball: Denison closes out Capital Touney on a positive note

Holly Leonard was named to the All-Tournament team at Capital University.

Denison closed out play at Capital University's Mid-Month Madness Tournament with a 3-0 (25, 21, 25-19, 25-18) victory over Elizabethtown.  The Big Red return home from the two-day tournament with a 3-7 overall record.

Against Elizabethtown, Denison first-year outside hitter Lauren Strowder (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) paced the Big Red with 12 kills.  The setting tandem of Ali Trotter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and Claire Koneval (Solon, Ohio/Solon) combined for 39 assists and freshman Kristen Hughes (Dowington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) added two blocks.  Junior Holly Leonard (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) was the team leader in digs with 18.

In Saturday's opening match versus Albion, DU suffered a 3-1 (28-26, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19) loss to Albion College.  Megan Early (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren) led the way with 12 kills and four blocks while Trotter and Koneval each posted 27 assists.  Leonard aided with 27 digs for the Big Red and was named to the All-Tournament team for her outstanding play.

Denison will open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday (Sept. 26) when they host Hiram College at 7 p.m.
