Volleyball: Denison posts 2-2 mark at Chicago's Gargoyle Classic

Freshman Claire Koneval recorded 32 assists in a win over Rockford

The Big Red closed out the University of Chicago's Gargoyle Classic at 2-2, splitting Saturday's matches with Rockford and Trinity Christian.

After splitting the first four sets with the Rockford (19-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 21-25) the Big Red outlasted the Regents in the fifth tie-break set 15-11 to capture their second victory of the young season.

Senior Kasia Kucharski (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) and junior Sara Mason (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) each recorded 13 kills in the match while freshman Claire Koneval (Solon, Ohio/Solon) added 32 assists. Chicago native Holly Leonard (Evanston, Ill/Evanston Twp.) kept the hometown crowd happy with 24 digs in the match.

The Trinity Christian Trolls jumped out to a 25-11 victory in the first set and closed out the Big Red with 25-17 and 25-20 set wins to take the match.
Freshman Morgan Sturgeon (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) led the team with 10 kills as Koneval and senior Ali Trotter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) combined for 29 assists. Leonard added 15 digs.

Denison returns to action Wednesday for a non-conference match at Otterbein College at 7 p.m. in Westerville.
