| History: |
Built in 1973 of white synthetic stone in the New Brutalism style, Burke Hall honors Orville & Jennie Glenn Burke, the parents of Denison trustee Edmund G. Burke who was a noted art collector and originator of the Denison Art Treasure Collection. New Brutalism is a style of totally abstract architecture introduced in 1951 by the Finnish architect Alva Aalto.
The hall contains a 255-seat recital hall, an orchestra rehearsal room, a "black box" theatre and a climate-controlled gallery space that is now home to the Denison Museum. Nearly 8,000 items from Asia, Europe, the United States, Central America and Native America are included in the museum's collections. The Asian collection is the largest group with 4,000 objects from Burma, China, Thailand and Japan. The exhibition space is used to showcase not only pieces from Denison's permanent collections, but also a wide variety of works from other museums and artists. The museum also presents lectures, symposia and gallery tours, hosts a book club and family day events, and participates in the educational programming for volunteers through the Granville Museum Consortium.
