Incidents - Sexual Orientation

January 18, 2008

Incident:  A non-Denison student who has been restricted from the campus was identified by a security monitor in his vehicle on the premises.  As the officer approached the vehicle, the non-Denison student rolled down the window of his vehicle, yelled the officer's name and referred to him as a "f--king faggot."  Before the officer could confront the behavior, the non-Denison student sped away from the scene.

Action:  The incident was reported to the Chief of Security.

Status:  Under investigation.

December 11, 2007

Incident:  A Building Sevices staff member reported bias-related graffiti in a second floor male toilet stall in Doane Library.  The graffiti was of a sexual nature and referenced gay, lesbian, bisexexual, and transgendered individuals.  Additional graffiti of a sexual nature was also found in a another male bathroom on the floor.

Action Taken:  Building Services was directed to remove the writings from the walls.  The incident was reported to Campus Security.

Status:  Under investigation.

October 25, 2007

Incident:  A student concern was reported to the Director of AOD and Helath Education regarding an incident that was allegedly reported to members of Outlook.  According to the student, a friend of Outlook members reported that his Shorney room had been 'trashed' on an unspecified date.  Allegedly, the person(s) who committed the act wrote graffiti on the walls and doors that included words such as 'faggot,' 'cocksucker,' and 'queer.".  Additionally, the person(s) posted magazine pictures of men, upon which they had drawn penises and other vulgar images.

Action Taken:  The concern was forwarded to the the Chief of Security for investigation.  Students have been interviewed and the room of the alleged event has been identified.

Status:  Action pending.

October 23, 2007

Incident:  An RA in Shorney Hall reported hearing a male voice in the hall at approximately 1:05 AM.  The RA heard the voice say, "Hey faggot, what's up faggot, you got a guy in there faggot?"  Upon opening the door, the RA observed the student talking into the darkened room across the hall.  The RA confronted the student, saying that the language the student was using was inappropriate.  The student responded stating he did not mean it "that way."

Action Taken:  The RA collected the student's ID information and reported the incident to the area Assistant Director.  The Director of Community Rights and Standards was also alerted to the incident and reported it to Campus Security for appropriate investigation.

Status:  Under investigation.

October 13, 2007

Incident:  A security monitor reported vulgar and offensive language written in the 2nd floor hallway of Shorney Hall, as well as in the stairwell between 2nd and 3rd floors.  Offensive graffiti was also discovered in a stairwell in Smith Hall.  Among the words written was the word "faggot."

Action Taken:  Both housekeeping and maintenance were notified and the offensive language was removed.

Status:  Under investigation.

September 15, 2007

Incident:  Several RAs in Shorney Hall reported that an unknown person(s) had scrawled several staff door decorations and bulletin boards with the words "whores," "sluts" and "fags."  The door of one staff member had been stripped of all of its signs and was defaced with  black magic marker; specifically, the writing read, "[RA's name] is a fucking fag" and "fuck you." 

Action Taken:  All defaced decorations were removed.  Housekeeping and physical plant were alerted to the damage done to the staff member's door.  The door was cleaned, sanded and refinished.

Status:  Under investigation.

August 14, 2007

Incident:  A male student provided to the Assistant Dean of Students a letter he had received in his Slayter mailbox from an unknown person.  The letter was sent from a city in Michigan and had a Saturday, August 4th postmark.  The letter was made using cut out letters from a magazine and read, "Don't come back to Denison you fucing (no "k") fag.  E-SE..."  There appeared to be a WA symbol handwritten at the bottom.

Action Taken:  The Assistant Dean turned the letter over to the Chief of Security for investigation.  On August 15, 2007, a security officer met with the student who had received the letter to inquire if he wanted to file a report with Granville Police.   The student informed the officer he did not want to pursue any legal action.

Status:  No further action at this time.
