From the Fire: Ceramic Sculpture

Ceramics were first acknowledged as an independent subject in Korean universities in 1958. Soon after, contemporary Korean ceramicists began to make ties with their American counterparts. Scholarships to study in the United States were given to numerous Korean artists who wished to be trained abroad, thus creating an opportunity for cultural exchange of ideas. New information was brought to Korea, while new skills were being taught simultaneously for preserving the Korean ceramic tradition.

The 1970s saw a sudden increase in ceramic interest and output. Groups and associations provided support and helped elevate awareness of modern ceramics. Most universities throughout Korea established art and art-related departments. New solutions were found to some of the technical problems in creating contemporary ceramics. More art departments bought kilns and firing systems. Students had the opportunity to control their own firing and glaze making, hence further developing ceramic education and progress.

When we look at the contemporary ceramic movement in Korea, it is truthful to state that it began in universities. Even today, much of its development is provided by higher education. At these institutions, fine art and applied arts exist together, providing a strong artistic ground for challenging the boundaries of both. Students are able to experiment, and continue living the development of contemporary art.
