Eclectic Collecting: Art from Burma in the Denison Museum. Alexandra Green, ed. Singapore: Singapore University Press. Forthcoming October 2007.
This volume provides an in-depth study of art from Burma in the collection of the Denison Museum. Contributors to the catalogue include Susan Conway, Sandra Dudley, David and Barbara Fraser, Sylvia Fraser-Lu, Alexandra Green, Teena Jennings-Rentenaar, Lisa Morrisette, and Mandy Sadan.
In the catalogue contributors discuss theoretical approaches to the study of textiles, and examine in some depth the production and use of textiles by the Karenic, Chin, Kachin, Lahu, Tai, and Wa minority groups, as well as ethnic Burmans, within the context of their histories and cultures. Two chapters on lacquerware and Buddha images provide an exposition of production techniques and how the examples in the collection reflect contemporary political, social, and religious trends and requirements.
