Supporting comments: "One of Steve's greatest
contributions to the Denison community is his insistence on open
dialogue and on an informed and open-minded approach to all issues.
Steve has worked to create interracial conversations about race
relations on campus. His ability to engage productively in these
conversations in interracial groups stems from his willingness and
eagerness to see the world from various points of view; at the same
time, he is not afraid to be challenged, corrected, or even changed.
Steve helped to organize the teach-ins that followed September 11th and
he worked with Anti-Racist Action on attempts to create a better
climate for dialogue between students of different races on campus.
Steve provides a model of openness; while so many people are hesitant
to engage with ideas that challenge their beliefs, Steve trusts the
process of open debate and discussion. Steve's work as President of the
Denison Lecture Series clearly follows his efforts to provoke dialogue,
to be informed, and to hear different points of view. He has shown
himself to be organized, socially engaged and inquisitive, and
responsive to the needs of others."
