Supporting comments: "As a resident of Morrow House the first year it was designated a service-learning house, Debbie rallied the other residents to service in many ways. Debbie received the Robert R. Smith Award for outstanding work as an RA at the end of her first year on staff. After her Homelessness and Theology class, she founded the Inn At Broad Street committee in DCA, and recruited others to spend overnights at the homeless shelter, working with kids. Debbie has been given every award possible in DCA for her countless hours of service and for the way she strengthens the organization. As a member of cabinet, she worked to bring service ideas into the residence halls. Debbie is a board member on the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Licking County. Perhaps her most powerful impact is providing a model of an academically successful student who is deeply engaged in service to others. Off-campus, Debbie's impact is reflective of her commitment to service. Her service has been so outstanding that she received the Charles J. Ping Award for Community Service to the state of Ohio. This is an award given annually by Ohio Campus Compact to the college student who has provided distinguished community service in the state. For each of the past two summers, Debbie has been awarded a campus Ashbrook Scholarship to conduct research on homelessness in our local county. The result of Debbie's research is that she has identified a homeless management information system (HMIS) that will be adopted by the local county to coordinate homeless services and track clients. Clearly, Debbie's impact beyond the campus is tangible and will serve to meet the real needs of real people."
