"I dream of a new age of curiosity. We have the technical means for it; the desire is there; the things to be known are infinite; the people who can employ themselves at this task exist. Why do we suffer? From too little: from the channels that are too narrow, skimpy, quasi-monopolistic, insufficient. There is no point in adopting a protectionist attitude, to prevent 'bad' information from invading and suffocating the 'good.' Rather, we must multiply the paths and the possibility of comings and goings."
Michel Foucault, "The Masked Philosopher" (also a quote in the Nick Cave exhibit Meet Me at the Center of the Earth at the Seattle Art Museum)
What does a Fine Arts Liaison do?
I work with students and faculty in the fine arts (theatre, studio art, art history, music, dance, and cinema) providing research assistance, developing the fine arts collection, and teaching classes about fine arts library resources and research methods. I work at the library reference desk and participate in library committees. I serve as a liaison for several interdisciplinary departments (Women's Studies and Queer Studies) and am also member of the Denison Museum Advisory Board. I am also a DJ on Denison's Radio station (which is only in operation during the school year) WDUB 91.1 (a.k.a. "The Doobie").
I am currently working with Professor Cynthia Turnbull on the creation of a digital costume archive as a part of the Next Generation Libraries Grant.
My background
I am a fiction writer and a painter. I was a studio art minor in college and am a firm believer in the importance of life-long learning and research in support of the continued development of a creative life. With that in mind, I plan to one day learn to play the cello and become a synchronized swimmer (but not simultaneously). I am interested in the intersection of art and science as inquiry based interdisciplinary creative practices - which is a fancy way of saying I am interested in both art and science.
Prior to coming to Denison (in August 2009) I completed library internships in architecture archival work at the University of New Mexico, in reference and public services at the University of Pittsburgh, and in reference and collection development in the Fine Arts Library at Carnegie Mellon University. Much of my past work experience was in non-profit, community-based organizations addressing issues related to education, landscape and urban design, and public art. I served on the City of Pittsburgh Arts Commission for three years and also actively participated in public art and community building activities citywide.
