Ashley Bancroft was an active abolitionist and the first meeting of the Ohio State Anti-Slavery Society was held in his home. The meeting led to the "Granville Riot" of 1836. The house was also a station on the Underground Railroad and early childhood home of Hubert Howe Bancroft, Ashley's son and renowned Pacific Coast historian. The home was part of the Deeds Purchase of 1917.
