7-1-08 Database Changes

Beginning July 1, several OhioLINK databases will be replaced with new resources. The affected databases are funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, which is administered through the State Library of Ohio, and are available to all Ohioans through Libraries Connect Ohio (LCO). LCO is a collaborative effort of OhioLINK, OPLIN,INFOhio, and the State Library of Ohio. Libraries Connect Ohio is constantly striving to provide the strongest portfolio of research resources possible to serve the diverse lifelong learning needs of all Ohioans, within budgetary limitations.

What’s Changing?

In addition, OhioLINK will not be renewing its subscription to Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals and Bibliography of the History of Art. Some OhioLINK member libraries may continue to subscribe some of the cancelled resources individually. Please contact your library with any questions.

4-13-08 Food for Fines

Donate food to reduce your library fines and help a good cause at the same time. In honor of National Library Week (4-13-08 to 4-19-08) the library will accept non-perishable food items for the Food Pantry. In exchange for each item you bring in, you can receive $2.00 off your fines for overdue items. This does not apply to lost or billed items.

Ever had to eat your words? For the fifth consecutive year, you can eat some very delicious words at the Edible Books Festival held in the Denison University Libraries. The creations may be viewed starting at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in the Atrium of Doane Library (400 West Loop), and tea will be served along with the books at 3:30 p.m. A string quartet comprised of Denison students will provide music for the event. Everyone is welcome to participate in creating an edible book or just to come and join in the festivities. “Book” entries must be brought to the library by 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Internationally, the Books-2-Eat Festival is in its ninth year. Each entry features works of edible art in the form of books, words, or inspirations from books. Last year at Denison the winners were: Most “Bookish” – Retha Murray’s “Little Book of Chocolate” which was, literally, a little book made out of chocolate bars; Most Creative – Karen Ordonez’s “A Modest Proposal,” a baby-shaped meatloaf, complete with diapers fashioned from mashed potatoes; Best Presentation – Rachel Baxter, Kristin Birdsall and Teresa Hummel’s “Seussville.” This was a “Cat in the Hat” interpretation made of cake which was topped off with a goldfish bowl. And the Best of Show was awarded to Seanna Holtz for “A Farewell to Arms.” The display consisted of a fondant-covered cake in the shape of an octopus with eight disembodied licorice arms. This year a prize will also be awarded for the Most Hilarious entry.

The rules are simple. All entries must be completely edible and able to be out for an hour or two without refrigeration. If serving pieces are not disposable, the entrant is responsible for taking them away after the event. Anything left will be discarded.
