Reference Materials:

Reference books give you a general overview of a person or topic. They can be a good starting point, since many of the entries are written by leading scholars in the field, and entries often include bibliographies.

Finding Books:

  1. Use the OhioLINK Central Catalog in one of the following ways:

    • An AUTHOR search for a director's name (ex.: nair, mira) will result in a list of films by that director AND screenplays by that director

    • A TITLE search (ex.: farewell my concubine) will result in a list of videos and books with the search phrase either in the title or table of contents.

    • A KEYWORD search (ex.:"aimee and jaguar") will search all portions of the catalog record
--Use AND between terms to narrow your search
--Use OR between like terms/synonyms to save time
--Use * to search all forms of a word
--Use ( ) to create a complex search
         --Use " " to search a phrase

  2. Print out the items you are interested in by following these steps:
    • Add items to your "Saved List" by clicking "Save for Export."
    • To get to the Saved List, click "View Saved Records."
    • To print the list, click "Screen" under "Send List To." Make sure "Full Display" is selected under "Format of List."
    • A new printer-formatted screen should appear with all the items you saved.

  3. Check the OhioLINK Catalog record to see if there is a copy available at Denison. If there isn't a local copy, request one via OhioLINK (use "Request this Item" link).

Finding Articles:

Databases and Indexes help you find relevant articles from journals and magazines. After you find a good article, use the Library Catalog to obtain the journal issue (if the article is not in full text online). If Denison does not own the journal issue you need, simply place an InterLibrary Loan request.
