Tools & Basic Information

  • U.S. Geological Survey Map Projections
    Descriptions of key properties, characteristics, and preferred uses of many historically important and current map projections.
  • How far is it?
    Finds the latitude and longitude of two places you specify, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server.
  • U.S. Geological Survey Maps, Imagery and Publications
    From this page the USGS makes available its cartographic and geographic products, including digital topo maps, aerial and satellite images. 
  • Geodata.gov
    A Geospatial One-Stop E-Gov site providing access to geospatial data and information.
  • ArcExplorer Web
    A custom mapping application that allows you to view through your Web browser one or multiple maps from different web sites using WMS or ArcIMS maps.  You can also same the maps you create and place links to these maps on your Web site.
  • Geographic Information Systems (Use with Internet Explorer)
    U.S. Geological Survey site that provides a comprehensive overview of GIS technology and its uses.

Atlases and Political/Physical Maps

This section also contains map websites of a general nature which may include a wide variety of topical maps in additional to political and physical maps.

  • National Atlas of the United States
    Includes interactive, printable maps. Define an area and then select from a list of layers (biology, people, climate and much more) to display your customized map.
  • National Geographic Map Machine
    Zoom-in satellite and road maps for anywhere in the world.
  • National Geographic Atlas Explorer
    Zoom-in, high resolution geopolitical and geophysical maps of any area in the world.
  • National Map Viewer
    Zoom in to access topographical map of a particular area, then add layers to that map by selecting from a long list of datasets including climatology, hydrology, biology, natural hazards, land use.  Dataset partners include the Bureau of Land Management, Census Bureau, National Geodetic Survey, National Park Service, and Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • Atlapedia - Political and physical maps
    Political and physical maps of the world--an online atlas which includes basic geo-political information on every country.
  • Color Landform Atlas of the United States
    For each state you may select from a menu that includes a topo map, county maps, black and white map, an 1895 map, and a satellite image.

Social & Economic

  • American Fact Finder Maps
    U.S. Census Bureau provides two tools for creating, viewing, printing and downloading maps. The Reference Map Server provides maps that show Census boundaries, cities and towns, urban areas, congressional districts, census tracts, and more. The Thematic Map Server allows for viewing social and economic data from the last 2 decennial Census and from the Economic Census and from the Population Estimates program.
  • World Bank Maps
    Access maps from the World Bank Atlas.  Development data and statistics available for every country.
  • Enterprise Geographic Information System - HUD(Use Internet Explorer)
    Create community planning and economic development maps. Choose to display such features as flood and environmental hazard areas and enterprise zones.

  • GOS
    Use GOS-Geospatial One Stop to view maps and data on natural hazards and natural resources around the world.
  • Web Soil Survey(Use Internet Explorer)
    Define an area of interest (address or county, for instance); then select the soil survey tab to view the soil map for that area; the explorer tab lets you determine the suitability of the soil for a particular use.
  • Daily Weather Maps 1871- 2001 and 2002- present
    These sites provide acess to historical daily weather maps from NOAA.
  • Flood Hazard Mapping
    Access to FEMA-issued flood insurance maps and flood insurance studies for the area that you specify.
  • National Earthquake Information Center
    Maps and data on earthquake activity world wide.
  • ShakeMap
    Near real-time maps of ground motion around the world.

Topographic

  • Historical Topographic Maps for Google Earth
    From this introductory page go to the collection of Historical Topographic Maps which open in Google Earth. Most of these maps are of the Southwest, Oregon, Washington and the Gulf Coast.  
  • The USGS Store - Map locator
    Maps of the U.S. from the U.S. Geological Survey. Select an area by clicking on the map, by entering a place name or street address or by entering the longitude and latitude.

Ohio

  • PUCO Maps and GIS
  • The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio provides links to maps and GIS data for a wide array of subjects, such as utility, telephone and school district maps.
  • Ohio Department of Transportation Maps
    Ohio road maps, including an archival file of maps dating back to 1912. Areial engineering maps and USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps for Ohio are available.
