Presentation remarks:

"Jill, the phrase that is a ringing bell in your letters of nomination for the President's Medal is "consummate scholar-athlete." Phi Beta Kappa, a double major in Education and German, and all-time doyen of the study of German language and culture, you graduate this year with a formidable academic record. The climactic moment of your academic achievement is your winning of not one, but two highly competitive national postgraduate scholarships: A Fulbright Teaching Scholarship in Germany, and also a Fulbright to Austria. You have taken your love of German to the field of education, where you have made significant contributions to the education of students in area public schools. As one noted local educator boasted, you are a "gift to our class and to Denison University....bright, practical and endowed with a great measure for common sense and intelligence for positive, everyday living.

"At the same time, as one of Denison's most accomplished swimmers ever, you have left a trail of smashing records and setting new ones:
4-year, 18 time All-American

3-time National champion in 100 Butterfly

4-year All NCAC

14 performances that rank in the top 10 in Denison history

12 performances that rank in the top 20 in small college history

"While achieving at this spectacular performance level, you have also demonstrated powerful team leadership, serving as strong leader, emotional anchor, and North Star for the rest of the team.

"You accomplished all this through a deep combination of talent and sheer hard work, a role model for younger students in the classroom and in the pool. In commenting on your wide range of accomplishments, your German professor sums it up well: "You are the picture of Minnesota grit and should be placed beside 'A Prairie Home Companion' as the best Minnesota has to offer!"
