Presentation Remarks:

Zack, your contributions on and off campus have been a zenith to the Denison community in both academics and service. You are characteristically seen to lead the charge to improve any organization you are a part of. You have used your time here to dedicate yourself to the Denison Community Association, where the breadth of your involvement ranged from mentoring programs, such as the Denison Companions and Homelessness and Hunger, to special projects such as Make a Difference Day, to serving on the DCA cabinet and as chair of Operation Moveout. As the president of DCA, you brought a leadership vision that led to revising its internal structure in ways that re-energized student involvement and contributed to a positive student culture on our campus and to the improvement of life for people in our country and in Namibia. Your efforts to draw students into community service and social change culminated in the one credit course:  “Be the Change(maker): Exploring and Experiencing Changemaking,” — a course that was inspired by the dinner dialogue you co-organized with fellow student Phoebe Myhrum for students, faculty and staff. As a member of the Denison Venture Philanthropy Club, you deepened our understanding of social entrepreneurship, and you did it as much through action as vision. You independently volunteered in the Math Counts program as an inspiring and dedicated middle school math tutor. You organized Denison students’ attendance at the IMPACT conference on social change, and you dedicated a summer to interning at the Center for Global Education in Namibia. Through all of your work, you have been a grand change maker, and you have created a legacy for Denison and for the local and global communities you have served. As one of your recommenders writes, our pride in you is not only because of what you have accomplished, but because of what you have drawn others into accomplishing. We are delighted to present you with this medal, grateful for all that you have done for Denison, and proud to know that Teach for America will be the next beneficiary of your gifts as an educator and community builder.
