Sara Abou Rashed is known for being a local poet and performer behind the one-woman show "A Map of Myself."

She will take the stage at 7 p.m. on June 15 to share how her mother’s cookie recipe helped her form a friendship with an unlikely neighbor as part of the Columbus Storyteller’s Project event Neighbors at the Columbus Athenaeum.

The event is sponsored by The Columbus Dispatch and Rashed will be joined by four other local storytellers.

Sara Abou Rashed:19-year-old's one woman show promotes cultural understanding

Her story — “Cookie Chronicles” — was inspired by her experiences of food bringing people together, despite their differences.

“A country is two neighbors stitched at a time — cookies may just be the thread,” she said.

The  22-year-old Muslim woman formed a bond with a Christian, conservative neighbor in her 60s.

Rashed insists her mother’s Palestinian recipe for special Eid cookies was the key and that food can help turn even though most different neighbors into friends.

“My mother is the best cookie maker and giver out there,” Rashed said. “She becomes fond of people very quickly and easily, she immediately starts giving them sweets and foods, which is all anyone needs to make others smile.”
